Did China's attempt to ship in pro China mobs backfire?

Chinese officials were caught on film co-ordinating Pro China mobs in Canberra today. Reports shoed pro China groups harring and abusing human rights protestors and some have indicated they were physically attacked by these groups. Media images show Chines defending the dictatorship. Does this reinforce China as a brutal enemy of free speech?
