Any advice? I would like to become a dog walker.?
I ran a dog walking business for years. You need to be a professional business handler to be able to achieve your goals. You cannot just say here I'm a dog walker. It takes a lot to be gaining the trust of your desired clientele. For starters, you want to get business insurance. The reason is, anything is possible on a dog walk. For instance: the dog you are walking gets hurt, or there is a neighbor walking by you while you are walking your clients dog, who trips over the leash and breaks her back. She would come after you for that bill. You could be in your clients house and you knock something over and break it. You must be covered for any possible incident. Travelers Insurance is a great choice for this type of coverage. They cover everything for this business. I used them. Now, you also need to make sure you understand dogs completely like all of their behaviors: aggressive behavior, fear aggressive, pive, calm, etc. You need to be sure you can handle any size dog you are walking. You need to be sure you are capable of handling any dog on a walk. You also need to decide are these individual walks? Or are they group walks? Personally I preferred individual walks which my clients really liked and felt more comfortable with their dog on an individual walk rather than a dog group walk. Now sometimes you may have two neighbors next to each other who have their dogs walk together with you who know each other. You need to make sure you can handle more than one dog on a walk at a time. How long are you going to walk these dogs? Typically owners like it when you offer a 30 minute walk. That is the average offering walk time given by dog walkers. Now are they going to be walked once a day? Twice a day? Or 3 times a day? Will they need to be fed while you are there for your walk visit? You must be able to handle all weather in this business. Owners do not care if it's raining, snowing, stormy etc, they still want you to walk their dog. How will they know you came to walk their dog and what you did? You will want to leave a service report that says you walked their dog, did they poo or pee? Did they eat if told to feed them. etc. How much are you going to charge your clients? Search around your local dog walking businesses at their rates and see if you can compete with them. Most of them have websites where you can get a general idea of your own business style for your desire. Come up with a business website that is interactive with clients and potential clients. This is just a jump start to give you. I hope I helped.
